“I’m just looking for that dare to be great situation.” – Lloyd Dobler
I love 80’s movies…like really LOVE them…Can’t Buy Me Love, Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, etc. That’s why today’s Friday Favorites features one of my all time favorites…Say Anything. It’s a romantic comedy, written and directed by Cameron Crowe, and stars John Cusack as Lloyd Dobler and Ione Skye as Diane Court.
It’s not your ordinary rom-com where the woman falls for the man. It’s from a guy’s point of view and he pursues her. It’s refreshing to see a sensitive, vulnerable guy’s perspective and it’s probably why Lloyd Dobler is so lovable.
PREACH. First of all, I love Lili Taylor and this might be one of my favorite lines from the movie. So basically Lloyd is refusing to fight for Diane because of his wounded pride. Be a man and GO FIGHT FOR HER!! Pride sucks and it gets in the way of sooooooooo many beautiful possibilities. Women have a hard time with pride but it seems like men have a harder time with it. Yes, you might get hurt but that’s life. It’s okay to feel broken sometimes. You learn amazing lessons that make you stronger and wiser.
Breakups are hard. We’ve all been through them and they never get any easier. And this is probably why we all get scared of putting ourselves out there, but love is worth it sometimes. There’s just something about seeing a man be honest and vulnerable though. Lloyd Dobler never fails to show us that throughout this movie and that’s what makes us love him even more. How many times have we given our heart away with really nothing in return? UGH too many times. We are left with just “pens” seeking to understand how that’s even possible. Guard your heart ladies, guard it with every ounce of your being.
Way too many people are in relationships because they just need someone. Needing the right person is different from needing just about anyone that will fill that void. The way I interpret what he’s saying is that it’s him specifically that he wants her to truly need and want. Love is sacrifice. Sometimes it’s really hard to be vulnerable and put yourself out there because you never know if all you’ll get in return is a “pen.” It’s worth a chance though.
“Nobody really thinks it will work, do they? You just described every great success story.”
Everyone always has an opinion about your life. You’re the only one that knows what’s right and what isn’t for you. Sometimes relationships work out and sometimes they don’t. Isn’t it better to take a chance than to always wonder what might have been? Sometimes the unexpected can be the best thing that ever happened to you. Prove people wrong and TAKE CHANCES.
My favorite scene in the entire movie is when Lloyd Dobler stands outside Diane’s window blasting “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel from his boombox. Is it cheesy? YES! Do I care? NO! Sometimes gestures or shall I say actions speak louder than words. And if a guy actually has the guts to do something like this for a girl, well props to him! Way to put aside your pride! Yeah you had me at boombox. SWOON.
So basically Say Anything just shows you that every experience, every chance you take, no matter how heartbreaking it can be, could end up being quite exceptional. It’s worth it. It’s everything.
Oh how I love 80’s movies…now go watch Say Anything like now. But seriously why isn’t my life like an 80’s movie?!?! HA. So what’s your favorite 80’s movie?
