Do you love Grey’s Anatomy as much as I do? Seriously, it is such a great show. I absolutely love Dr. Meredith Grey’s monologues and I feel like throughout the years there have been some powerful quotes that have come from this show. Every show has such a life lesson and it’s incredibly moving at times. I feel like most of the quotes I like come from Meredith but there are other characters who have said some good things as well. I thought I would share just a few of my favorite lessons from the show. There are far too many to choose from so these are just a few!
1. ADMIRE THE STRUGGLE IT TAKES TO SIMPLY BE HUMAN.
“Maybe we’re not supposed to be happy. Maybe gratitude has nothing to do with joy. Maybe being grateful means recognizing what you have for what it is. Appreciating small victories. Admiring the struggle it takes to simply be human. Maybe, we’re thankful for the familiar things we know. And maybe we’re thankful for the things we’ll never know. At the end of the day, the fact that we have the courage to still be standing is reason enough to celebrate.” — Dr. Meredith Grey
I absolutely love this. Appreciating small victories. Admiring the struggle just to be human. Just being thankful. Life is hard and it really does take so much courage and strength to get through life these days. It can be hard, really hard, but the fact that we can battle through is definitely something to celebrate.
2. BE SINCERE AND PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE WITH NO REGRETS.
“Okay, here it is, your choice… it’s simple, her or me, and I’m sure she is really great. But Derek, I love you, in a really, really big pretend to like your taste in music, let you eat the last piece of cheesecake, hold a radio over my head outside your window, unfortunate way that makes me hate you, love you. So pick me, choose me, love me.” — Dr Meredith Grey
This is everything! She gets me. She really gets me. Music, cheesecake, and a Say Anything movie reference…YES!! The last part of this quote kind of reminds me of the memorable one from the movie Notting Hill…”I’m just a girl standing in front of boy, asking him to love her…” I really like everything this stands for.
3. ACCEPT WHAT IS GONE AND OPEN YOURSELF TO THE UNKNOWN.
“Funny, isn’t it, the way memory works? The things you can’t quite remember, and the things you can never forget. There can be beauty in getting lost. Sometimes we have to get lost to find each other. And sometimes we find each other, only to get lost all over again. You can’t always control it, the thing that’s going to set you adrift. And as you stand there on the front porch, staring at the life you’re about to leave behind, you have to accept it’s gone, it’s lost, just like you. All you can do now is stand very still, breathe in the moment, and try to be open to wherever the wind’s going to take you next.” — Dr. Meredith Grey
I always wonder why I can’t remember things about my childhood. I mean it’s quite ridiculous how much I can’t remember, yet there are things I wish I could forget but just can’t. It has been a rough couple of years for me and at times I have felt completely lost. Having no control in the matter caused and still causes a lot of frustration, but the only thing left to do is accept that the past is in the past and move forward. It’s time to embrace the moment and believe that things happen for a reason. Accept it and open yourself to the unknown.
4. NEVER SETTLE FOR LESS THAN WHAT YOU DESERVE.
“For a kiss to be really good, you want it to mean something. You want it to be with someone you can’t get out of your head, so that when your lips finally touch you feel it everywhere. A kiss so hot and so deep you never want to come up for air. You can’t cheat your first kiss. Trust me, you don’t want to. Cause when you find that right person for a first kiss, it’s everything.” — Dr. Alex Karev
I love this description of the perfect first kiss with the right person. It isn’t so much about the kiss but I think it just represents love in general. Passion. It’s all about passion. You know when it’s right and you know when it’s not. Never settle for less. Life is too short for that.
5. PAIN PUSHES YOU TO MOVE FORWARD.
“Doesn’t matter how tough we are, trauma always leaves a scar. It follows us home, it changes our lives, trauma messes everybody up, but maybe that’s the point. All the pain and the fear and the crap. Maybe going through all of that is what keeps us moving forward. It’s what pushes us. Maybe we have to get a little messed up, before we can step up.” — Dr. Alex Karev
I can tell you first hand that trauma does change your life. At first it is paralyzing and it puts you in a sea of darkness, but little by little you start to feel yourself coming back to life. Slivers of light start to peak its way back into your life. Trauma and pain may paralyze you for a while but it is also what pushes you forward. It makes you cherish the good things in your life. It makes you realize what actually matters and forces you to go up because you’ve already been as far down as you can go.
6. THERE ARE NO EASY ANSWERS OR SOLUTIONS.
“Pain, you just have to ride it out, hope it goes away on its own, hope the wound that caused it heals. There are no solutions, no easy answers, you just breathe deep and wait for it to subside. Most of the time pain can be managed but sometimes the pain gets you where you least expect it. Hits way below the belt and doesn’t let up. Pain, you just have to fight through, because the truth is you can’t outrun it and life always makes more.” — Dr. Meredith Grey
There is no greater truth than this. Pain will always be something that comes with life. I think we all just want to find an easy way to navigate and get through pain, but really it’s time that heals all wounds. It sucks to wait it out but really that’s all we can do. It’s up to us to find healthy ways to cope until the pain subsides completely.
7. YOU ARE STRONG ENOUGH TO SURVIVE EVERY STORM.
“There’s an end to every storm. Once all the trees have been uprooted. Once all the houses have been ripped apart. The wind will hush. The clouds will part. The rain will stop. The sky will clear in an instant and only then, in those quiet moments after the storm, do we learn who was strong enough to survive it.” — Dr. Meredith Grey
This is so powerful. I am a visual person and wow does this paint an incredible picture for me. I really love this because it’s true…there is always an end to every storm and that is so encouraging. Growing up, I was terrified of storms. Thunder scared the crap out of me, but it was temporary. I knew it would eventually end, just like the struggles in your life. No matter how much it feels like the storm or struggle will never end, it eventually will get weaker and weaker until it’s gone completely. At first the struggle will uproot you and rip you apart, but slowly you will start to put yourself back together. Don’t let the storm knock you out. You are strong enough to survive. This too shall pass.
I just really love this show and obviously the writing is incredible! I hope some of these lessons/quotes resonated with you in some way. I feel like there’s always a lesson to gain from this show.
