Happy Thursday to you all! So I have a bit of a review to share with you today. I fell off that clean eating/healthy eating wagon a few weeks back and I was definitely feeling it. I felt so sluggish and tired and just yucky! I decided to try a 3-day juice cleanse…yeah I know, what was I thinking!? I just wanted something to restart my system so I could start fresh. I can honestly say that I do feel rejuvenated after just completing the three days.
There are a lot of cleanses out there but after researching and reading some reviews, I decided to try the Suja Original Fresh Start cleanse. Check out their website for more information on their program. There are also 1 and 5-day cleanses as well. So basically you drink six 16 oz bottles of juice throughout the day for three days. They recommend not eating but if you must you are allowed raw fruit and veggies, half an avocado, a baked sweet potato, or broth-based soups. During the day you can drink water, teas, and other juices. No coffee…I almost died. No, but seriously I survived and I was surprised!
These are the juices and the order they go in throughout the day:
This program is not cheap. It’s about $9 a bottle, but before you say no way, please consider that each bottles contains over two pounds of organic, unaltered, pure vegetable and fruit juice. When you consider the cost of fresh produce, that’s totally worth it. I’m still shocked at how many fruits and vegetables they fit in each bottle. They tell you exactly what is in each one on the side of the bottle. I actually cheated and bought the cleanse on Amazon, because the shipping was so much cheaper! I bought it here. You can also buy these juices individually at Target. They may not carry all the flavors though.
The juices came packed with six ice packs, which I ended up keeping! I have to admit that the cleanse wasn’t as bad as I was anticipating. The juices were overall pretty great tasting and I was surprisingly not as hungry as I thought I would be. Don’t get me wrong I definitely had some moments of wanting to throw in the towel and eat a damn burrito but I stayed strong! I just kept saying “do it for the blog, do it for the blog.” HA! It actually felt good to maintain some self-control and power forward.
Giving up coffee was probably the hardest part of this cleanse. I just missed my warm cup of Joe in the morning. I thought for sure I would get bad caffeine withdrawal headaches but I didn’t. In fact, my biggest headache is today, the day after I finished the cleanse! I did get a couple mild headaches, but that is to be expected. I did feel pretty tired and weak, so I was in bed pretty much by 8pm each night. I think mainly it was my way of avoiding eating!
I really thought the juices were going to taste awful, but they were actually pretty good. My favorite was Spark, which contained water, strawberries, raspberries, lemon, honey, tart cherry, stevia and cayenne. It was sweet but had a little kick to it! It was a perfect dessert in the evenings. I didn’t dislike any of them but if I had to pick my least favorite it would probably be Glow or Purify. Both were a little heavy on the vegetable taste. The Glow had a cucumber/kale veggie, sweet taste and the Purify kinda of tasted dirty which is probably the beets and celery. All of the juices though were on the sweeter side so they were easy to drink.
I did “cheat” a bit but still stayed within their guidelines…well sort of. I ate some raw broccoli during the day and some pickles/green olives at night. I just needed something to chew on and was strangely craving salt in the evenings. I also drank a ton of water and some green tea, which had me peeing a crap ton throughout the day. A couple strange things: I was freezing throughout the cleanse and I had no crazy poops…in fact I had barely any until after it was over. HA.
I know people are going to ask so I will just tell you that yes I did in fact lose 5 pounds after it was all said and done. But I did not do this to lose weight, because let’s be honest that weight loss is pretty much just water weight and I’ll probably gain a bit of that back. I did it to feel refreshed and recharged and it did accomplish that.
Would I do this again? I’m not sure if I would…I mean it was great but this isn’t for the weak! It is really hard to just drink liquids. I’m glad I can say I did it and it was awesome not having to cook anything for three days. I don’t know, maybe I would, but I would definitely recommend doing it when you have nothing going on so you’re not tempted. Overall, it was a good experience and a great way to reset and recharge my body and mind. So tell me have any of you tried a cleanse before?
